    This project is intended to investigate, simulate and test a subsystem of a rock drill. The subsystem is a part of the rock drill and can for example be the rotation system, damper system, extractor system, percussion system or similar. The goal is to understand how it is working today from a physical/mechanic point of view and compare it to another technical approach.


    To drill holes in rock (Æ 20-200mm), a percussive rock drill is commonly used. In a rock drill, a percussive piston is used to repeatedly hit the drill string. The kinematic energy is transformed to elastic energy, as a stress wave which propagates through the drill string towards the drill bit, where it is used to crush the rock. By rotating the drill bit, the tool with inserted tungsten carbide buttons will crush the rock in a new position for each piston stroke.


    Your mission in this project will be to simulate, evaluate and possibly test a chosen system with an alternative power source and compare it to an existing system intended to have the same function. This project will be considered a success when there is knowledge, simulation models and laboratory tests enough to compare the dynamic behavior of the two systems


    To be successful with this project you should be at the end of your engineering studies and your main topic should be hydraulics, mechatronics, mechanics and/or electronics. You preferably are an analytical person and like to work with the behaviour of dynamic systems
