Spillway flow behaviours with and without aeration- Thesis, R&D

About the thesis

• The project is to be performed at Vattenfall R&D.

• Thesis subject / assignment – Aeration arrangements exist in many dam spillways. To understand the aeration behavior helps in decision making concerning both medium and high flood discharges. Spillway flows need to be aerated in order to avoid jet oscillations in the flow direction and unfavorable conditions of energy dissipation and channel erosion downstream. Some aeration passages are sealed to avoid problems with rain and snow. It is not clear if this affects flood discharges.
  
• Thesis goal / purpose – For the chosen spillway configuration, to set up CFD models and perform modeling in three dimensions (3D), to examine the flows with and without aeration, to compare the results in terms of jet behaviors and sub-pressure conditions and to make recommendations. Observations from the previous physical hydraulic model and the prototype are also available for inclusion as part of the comparisons.

Your profile

We are looking for a student to join our journey towards a fossil free future. You are soon to be graduated from your academic studies. You also identify yourself with our principles: active, open, positive and safe.
 
• Education – proper background is university education in civil (hydraulic) engineering, engineering physics or similar disciplines.  

• Scope – the project corresponds to a 30 hp diploma work

• Fluent written English is required

• Strong interests in hydropower, dam safety and hydraulic engineering

• The time of execution should be within four (4) months, completed during 2022

• Location: Älvkarleby, Stockholm, Uppsala or by agreement
