R&D Engineer within Control and Optimization for Wind Power at Power Technology, Vattenfall R&D
Do you want to be part of the journey towards fossil free living within one generation? Vattenfall is at the forefront of driving the transformation of the energy landscape towards more renewables and with sustainability in absolute focus. Do you want to be a force in taking Vattenfall forward in this direction enabling our grids to make room for new active customers, fossil-free living, and include higher amounts of weather-dependent power production?
Are you looking for a diverse working place characterized by team spirit, flexibility and an open atmosphere?
If yes: we have a great opportunity for you!
As an R&D Engineer we need you to strengthen our Section Power Technology by working to develop and use new technology in connection to wind power and more efficient use of power system components. You will be a member of the Control and Optimization team which currently are developing a modular control architecture targeting the development of Hybrid Power Plants. That is a combination of Wind, Solar, Batteries, and Green Hydrogen under the same point of connection. These plants hold the potential of reducing the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) of renewable plants, allowing them to remain profitable in subsidy-free markets.
Our latest success story is Haringvliet Zuid in the Netherlands. Running in parallel to our Hybrid Power Plant platform, we are also working on exploring new and exciting ancillary services that could be offered by wind farms and other green energy sources.
In the Control and Optimization group of Vattenfall R&D, we are looking for new developers that allow us to implement a full model-based design approach including Hardware-in-the-loop testing. As a member of the team you can expect various responsibilities ranging from low to high level design, classic development, system integration, testing and deployment. We operate with a pretty flat structure that encourages discussions and exchange of ideas. At the end of the day, we are developing cutting-edge solutions, so we need qualified and passionate people to find together the right path towards success.
Vattenfall R&D is responsible for conducting business driven technical development that creates value for the company and helps realizing our strategy. We work in agile teams close to the business of Vattenfall. The corporate R&D unit employs 120 people located in three different offices in Sweden and Denmark. The section Power Technology works with power system analysis needed to understand bottlenecks and dynamic behaviors in the electrical grid as well as optimization and control of the power system including both its loads and productions.
At Vattenfall R&D we go from ideas to real projects in short time. We know that our employees change the future of Vattenfall and their ideas are extremely important.
Vattenfall plays an active role in implementing new ways of controlling the power systems. We build the largest wind power plants in Europe and we have designed several large Micro Grid pilots. We believe that decentralized production will be the next energy revolution supported and driven by our customers, local control systems, digitalization, electrical components, as well as your engagement. This means great development needs in the electrical area.
Your qualifications and personal skills as R&D Engineer
We see that the successful candidate holds a Master’s degree in Control Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Power Technology or similar. While it is not a must, it is advantageous that you have a minimum of three years of experience in the design, control, or analysis of power systems for either distribution grids, energy industries, or wind power systems. Moreover, you have a strong command in simulation tools like Matlab/Simulink and Python. Since you will work in an international, diverse environment, fluency in English is a must, while a good command of Swedish or Danish is not a requirement but will be considered as a merit.
In this existing R&D Engineer role, you will have the opportunity to be a part of the Power Technology Section that delivers major and often challenging assignments together with other R&D Engineers from other teams, experts from Vattenfall, and consultants.
The following knowledge is needed:
• Master in Control Theory, Electrical Engineering-related field
• Experience in control development for the Renewable Energy industry
• Matlab/Simulink knowledge + code generation
• Experience in Model Predictive Control
• Experience with Version Control Systems (for instance Git)
Knowledge of the following is a plus:
• Python for data analysis and optimization
• Experience in real-time simulations
• Experience with HIL (TWINCAT, Opal-RT, RTDS, etc.)
• Good knowledge of C / C++
• Working Scrum
On the personal level, you are analytical, committed and self-driven with good communication and interpersonal skills. You are capable of leading teams and able to communicate clearly at all levels. You are able to develop rough ideas and ambitions into concrete and successful projects. As the work involves extensive interaction both internally and with external partners and suppliers, a good understanding of commercial aspects and an ability to establish and maintain relationships and networks is key. We believe that passion for new technology and research are a necessity for this role.
Location: Stockholm (Solna) or Älvkarleby in Sweden or Kolding in Denmark.
