About the thesis

The electrification of wider society & industry is one of the largest transformations we will experience during the upcoming years. Within the transportation sector, road traffic will undergo rapid decarbonisation via clean and efficient electrical drive trains and electric vehicles are coming at speed. To enable this transition fully it is key that the necessary infrastructure is in place. However, that is not always the case.
Along Swedish roads, predominantly in the northern part, charging infrastructure may be lacking thus making it hard to travel with electric vehicles. The area also sees significant seasonal traffic variation which produces very high occasional demand. At Vattenfall R&D we are interested in learning more about the potential gap between charging infrastructure and customer demand through to 2030 and how this gap can be eased. This proposal has a closely related Master thesis ‘Charging Infrastructure Need Along the Swedish Roads’.
Scope: What to do

• Involve critical stakeholders in a dialogue to summarize the view of charging infrastructure development and current market opportunities on sufficient charging capacity.

• Identify the hurdles and problems that these stakeholders see (e.g., seasonality, capital and operating costs, business risk profile). Focus also on which role VF could take in formulating solutions for securing charging capacity.

• Interview reference projects for battery supported EV charging.

• Dimension batteries for the identified sites in the gaps identified with charging capacity gaps.

• Develop system design specifications (common modules, packaging, modularity, mobile units, logistics etc.) for these nodes.

• Identify business models (how actors are positioning/ developing price models).

• Identify whether this is a transition technology or a longer-term need for mobile energy support.

• Pursue the collected insights in this assignment with the perspective of delivering a whitepaper.

• It is recommended that the study focuses on Norrland and Svealand.
Your profile

We are looking for students to join our journey towards a fossil free future. You are soon to be graduated from your academic studies. You also identify yourself with our principles: active, open, positive and safe.
• Education – education in engineering, preferably in energy and environment, or industrial economics.

• Scope – Master’s thesis 30hp (20 weeks).

• Required language skills: Swedish & English
