Summary department information:

The R&D unit Power Technology at Vattenfall delivers competence within the power system analysis area, static and dynamic, as well as its components, automation and communication in the grid, smart metering, and energy storage solutions.


Thesis subject / assignment:


DC (direct current) grids has not been deployed across the world specifically in the beginning of the electrical revolution due to high cost of operating and constructing DC rotating generators, and the high cost of transforming the DC to higher voltages with power electronics converters. However today these two factors have changed, the costs of power electronics have gone down, and new players have been introduced that generates power initially as DC and at lower voltages which do not have to rotate.


On the other hand, more and more the products that are operated at the LV side are becoming DC loads in nature, for example most of the electronic loads are equipped with rectifiers such as data centers, LED (light emitting diodes) lighting, even machines that are operated with a VFD (variable frequency drive). Moreover, the distributed resources like PV (photovoltaic), Batteries, and EV (electric vehicles) requires DC connection which makes the questions about the LVDC grids option open for discussion again.


Scope of the thesis:

The scope of this thesis work is to focus on the technical feasibility, challenges, existing technology “on the shelf”, and the standardization status and existing regulations for installing new and operating LVDC grids. A similar project to the thesis work will be run by Vattenfall AB that will analyse the business side of the question for distribution grids and the value preposition it will offer for Vattenfall organization. The thesis work will support the parallel project with valuable technical input during the thesis time.


Some of the expected challenges that brings up questions in the LVDC grids are including choosing the correct grid topology, the voltage levels, earthing system, voltage withstand and insulation, protection, and electromagnetic compatibility. All those questions are of interest for Vattenfall. Therefore, the student is required in the application to write a thesis proposal on one of the technical challenges that they are interested in pursuing in relation to the above challenges or any other challenge that they prefer if it is related to LVDC grids.

We are looking for a student to join our journey towards a fossil free future. You are soon to be graduated from your academic studies. You also identify yourself with our principles: active, open, positive and safe.


• Education – A current student at master’s level in electrical or power system engineering.

• Personality – We are looking for self-driven students that can work with minimum supervision specially that meeting in person might be minimal during those times.

• Scope – 30hp

• Language – Proficiency in English is a must, basic knowledge in Swedish language is meritorious.

• Start of assignment: Middle of January 2021 or upon agreement

• Location: Solna, Stockholm at Vattenfall head offices, but it is anticipated to be a combination of office work and work from home due to the current world situation.
