Developing the control system for the Pin-on-Disc tribometer, which is used to measure friction in the contact at variable speed and load profile in a short time interval.

During tightening of a screw, the variation in friction will affect the force acting on the joint, especially when tightening using torque as a control parameter. Since friction is such an important factor when aiming for a specific clamping force, it is of interest to simulate the contact and friction in the screw head to joint, and thread interfaces. This will lead to a possibility of gaining a deeper knowledge of friction characteristics when tightening, and how the dynamic friction relates to different coatings/ materials and screw geometries. In the end, it will enable us to develop tightening strategies that compensate for the friction variation to assure a better quality of the joint. Understanding friction behaviour will make it possible to influence the quality of the assembly.

Design a robust and flexible control system for the Pin-on–Disc machine. Evaluate different controller strategies to obtain the best tracking performance for both the pin and the disc actuation. Evaluate the different sensors relevant to the study of friction.
