About the job
ÅF has more than 1 500 engineers working in the international automotive industry. We have extensive experience in executing on-site as well as outsourced assignments and is running 10 automotive customer satellites. Our customers are mainly in Sweden, Brazil, UK, and China where we also have subsidiaries and offices.
Title Master Thesis Project: Advanced control of future electric propulsion systems that meet the dynamic requirements of small passenger vehicles
Background: Electric propulsion systems have advantages over conventional ones regarding high power density, short response time and better controllability. However, for future vehicles, equipped with more sophisticated safety functions, the requirements for controllability will be even higher. Also new driving cycles used for energy consumption, correlating better with normal driving, will put higher demands on drivetrain control.
Objective: The task is to study potential measures to improve controllability of electric drivetrains, in the view of ongoing development trends.
Methods: Through literature studies and interviews with subject matter experts, determine status and trends in e-motor technology, transmissions and power electronics. Analyse strengths and weaknesses regarding controllability of current and future systems. Develop principles, methods and solutions to improve the control accuracy, response time, predictability and reliability. Identify electrical as well as mechanical measures. Finally, demonstrate the findings theoretically with vehicles performing active safety manoeuvres. Driving scenarios of interest are quick acceleration (to prevent rear end collision), braking on low/split-m and crash avoidance manoeuvres using lateral displacement.
Deliverables: A report including:
- technical trends in electric propulsion technology
- principles for improving controllability, i.e. response time, precision and predictability
- demonstration of a typical drivetrain with/without improvements
Who are you?
Preferably 2 Master students with specialization in Automotive Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Electric Engineering or Product Development. You have strong analytical capability and use logic and methods to solve problems in an efficient manner. You also have a desire to develop technical and personal skills with high levels of motivation and a positive attitude.
